The Canadian flag is a symbol that unites the people of Canada. It pays homage to our geography, it reflects the grandeur of our history and represents our national identity. Our flag honors Canadians of all origins who, through their courage and determination, contribute to and continue to build Canada.
The maple leaf was raised for the first time on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on February 15, 1965 as the National Flag of Canada, the most important symbol of our country. On February 15, 1965, the Government of Canada declared this date be recognized each year as National Flag of Canada Day. Every year since, Canadians have been invited to celebrate their pride and recognize the privilege of living in Canada. |
